Recurrent Energy Completes 1.2 GWh Grid-Tied Arizona Energy Storage Project

As Arizona’s weather heats up, its energy resilience rises alongside! Recurrentenergy.com, a solar and energy storage pioneer and a Canadian Solar company, has inaugurated its massive 1,200 MWh Papago Storage plant. It’s not just any battery; it’s a key new anchor for APS (Arizona Public Service), Arizona’s largest utility, to store energy and supply it exactly when needed to drive down spiking electricity demand.

The Papago Storage facility is one of three co-developments between APS and Recurrent Energy that are aggressive. Together, these three first-of-their-kind installations will deliver a spectacular 1,800 MWh of battery storage capacity and 150 MWAC of solar power to Arizona’s grid. In aggregate, when all three are operating at full capacity, this triumvirate of movers and shakers will store and deliver as much electricity as 72,000 homes require for four hours, supported by solar capacity to power 24,000 homes annually.

“Summers’s arrived and APS is poised to supply its customers electricity when and where they require it,”

explained APS Director of Resource Acquisition Derek Seaman.

“The Papago Storage facility comprises a well-balanced and diverse mix of energy for us, and it enables us to maintain Arizona on industry-leading reliability and prices.”

This plant validates APS’s commitment to a secure and readily available supply of energy for its customers.

Apart from enhancing grid reliability, Papago Storage is also making a positive contribution to its community. In its Community CaRE (Community and Renewable Energy) Program, Recurrent Energy has gone beyond its corporate-level contributions by making donations directly to its most valued local organizations, such as the Harquahala Fire District and Arlington Elementary School in Maricopa County. The Papago Storage high-end facility was constructed and engineered by a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Solar, called e-STORAGE, a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company. e-STORAGE will also retain its commitment under a longer-service contract, providing the best possible facility performance.

“This commissioning of Papago Storage is a milestone in our APS relationship as we build out energy infrastructure in-state,”

Recurrent Energy’s Chief Executive Ismael Guerrero said.

“We’re happy to supply system flexibility to match state energy demand growth and appreciate APS’s continued collaboration. We’re well-positioned as we start operations to build long-term value for local stakeholders and partners.”

This new development provides evidence of the benefits of strategic partnerships in advocating for clean energy solutions.
